Downtown Tire & Auto: Celebrating 50 Years of Service and Community in Hastings
Tomorrow, Friday, September 27th, marks a special milestone for one of Hastings’ most cherished businesses—Downtown Tire & Auto is celebrating 50 years of family-owned excellence. Since 1974, the Kasel family has been dedicated to keeping Hastings residents on the road safely and reliably. In honor of their anniversary, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Greg Kasel, the current owner, to reflect on five decades of service and what this moment means for him and the business.
A Humble Beginning
Greg Kasel’s pride in the family business is evident as he recounts its origins. "Downtown Tire & Auto was started in 1974 as Downtown Shell Incorporated by my dad, Joey Kasel, and his partner Tom Kingston," Greg shares. Back then, they not only fixed cars but also sold gas—something that changed in 1983 when they shifted focus entirely to auto repair, officially becoming Downtown Tire & Auto.
The business has stayed in the family ever since. Greg joined full-time in 1986, working alongside his father until Joey retired in 1998, passing the torch to Greg. Now, 50 years later, the Kasel family legacy is still going strong, with Greg at the helm and a dedicated team that feels like family.

The Secret to Longevity
When asked about the key to Downtown Tire & Auto’s lasting success, Greg points to one essential factor—his employees. "Longevity is probably the employees," Greg says, adding that several of his staff have been with him for decades. "I've been here full-time since 1986. Dave has worked for us since 1981, so he's been here 43 years. My dad worked here from 1964 until he retired in 1998."
It’s clear that loyalty and experience run deep at Downtown Tire & Auto, and that commitment to excellence is reflected in the quality of service customers have come to trust over the years.

Overcoming Challenges
Like any long-running business, Downtown Tire & Auto has faced its fair share of challenges, particularly with the rapid advancement of technology in the automotive industry. "The biggest challenge has been keeping up with the technology,"Greg explains. From new computer systems to diagnostic equipment, staying ahead of the curve has required constant investment in tools and training.
But for Greg, meeting these challenges head-on has been crucial to maintaining the high standards his customers expect. "You have to keep up with the training," he notes, "to make sure we’re able to fix these new vehicles."

A Deep Connection to the Community
One thing Greg takes great pride in is the support Downtown Tire & Auto has received from the Hastings community. "With the support of the Hastings community, it allows me to give back," he says. Whether it’s sponsoring local events like Rotary Rivertown Live Concerts, supporting United Way, or sponsoring banners at the football field, Downtown Tire & Auto is always looking for ways to pay it forward.
“Giving back is huge,” Greg says, and it’s clear that his business is not just about fixing cars but being an active part of the community.

Honoring a 50-Year Legacy
For Greg, reaching this 50-year milestone is both humbling and gratifying. "It's humbling to be considered a part of that 50-year legacy," he shares. "Not many businesses reach 50 years. That's just a commitment that's hard to see these days."
As he reflects on the past and looks ahead to the future, Greg is committed to continuing the family tradition of providing excellent service. "I hope we're able to continue our success here, treat everybody with respect, and fix cars," he says.

Looking to the Future
So, what’s next for Downtown Tire & Auto? Greg’s vision for the future is simple: continue serving the community with the same dedication that’s brought them this far. He emphasizes the importance of maintenance to keep vehicles running longer, especially as new cars become more expensive. "New vehicles are a huge investment, and if you maintain them, you can get many more years out of them," Greg advises.
As Downtown Tire & Auto celebrates its 50th anniversary, it’s clear that their success is built on more than just auto repairs—it’s about family, community, and a commitment to excellence that has stood the test of time.
